Bicycle commute on BART

Brandon Soule

I recently changed jobs and my office is now in San Ramon.  Once I settle in, I'd like to do a bike-bart-bike commute a couple days a week.  Does anyone have experience taking a bike on Bart during commute hours?  I'm concerned the trains may be too crowded from Union City to Bayfair. I would guess Bayfair to Pleasanton would be okay (reverse commute).   Do Bart trains have a specific car that is intended for cyclists?

Thank you for your help.

I used to do this somewhat regularly when I lived in Fremont and went to school in Berkeley.  At that time the Fremont BART station was the end of the line, so getting on the train with a bike wasn't really a problem, and that was the only real obstacle.  I would imagine the train is still not that full by the time it gets to Union City station so you should be OK, but probably the only way to know for sure is to test it out.

If you want to know the BART bike rules:

BIKES ON BART RULESDuring non-commute hours, bikes are allowed on all trains except the first car or any crowded car.During commute hours (7:00 to 9:00 AM and 4:30 to 6:30 PM, weekdays), bikes are not allowed in the first three cars of any train.Folded bikes are allowed in all cars at all times.Regardless of any other rule, bikes are never allowed on crowded cars.
