Richard,
I bought my 530 from a store in Washington state, $249, no sales tax, free shipping.
It's an outdoor store like REI.

I know your question was for Garmin but the wahoo has been a very reliable and easy bike computer to use as well. It has extremely good battery life and the screen is more saturated than the Garmin so the data is more viable to see even at any light angle. I also enjoy the simplicity of editing the data pages on my phone by instead of pushing the buttons on the small computer. I’ve had mine for over 3 years and it is still good as new. I’m not sure if Garmin has this feature but the wahoo has a simplified topagraphy image so I can tell how far along I am on a climb so I can pace myself better. Lots of good advice on this thread. I would definitely advise against the 520+. Read dcrainmaker’s review of the edge 530 and it becomes readily apparent. I replaced my edge 520 with the 530 mainly because of lack of memory for more complex routes and slow processor performance for navigation. I actually love my previous garmins, edge 500, 520, but they were just getting too old and not able to keep up with the navigation capabilities of newer computers. Anyhow, the battery life is excellent and I especially like the WiFi capability and automatic ride download to Garmin Connect=>Strava. There are lots of other feature I like, but as Jay says, it just works and works well. I’ve owned garmin edge 130, 500, 520, 530 and a couple of Lezyne super micro computers. All of them had their quirks but I must say that so far, the edge 530 has been the least quirky so far with a really rich feature set and lots of flash memory (16GB) so it should e be good for many years of use. That’s sort of a sideways complement for Garmin. -West On Sep 17, 2020, at 08:38, Jay Gilson <jaymgilson@...> wrote:

Having been a devout Garmin user for many years I recently went for aStages Dash L50 instead based on a positive dcrainmaker review, Similar price to the 530. It pretty much does everything the 530 does but has an absolutely fantastic display which is great as your eyes become tired. Also has pretty good maps like the more expensive Garmins. Seems to work great. The only thing I dislike about it is the mount. I much prefer the Garmin 1/4 turn system. As others have suggested the DCrainmaker site has some great reviews of all your options Mark

Hi Donna,
I recommend that you take a look at the reviews at dcrainmaker.com, it’s my go to reference for cycling tech. As noted by Jay and Nick, the 530 is a vast improvement over the 520 plus. The 530 review is at: https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2019/04/garmin-edge-530-cycling-gps-in-depth-review.html
There are also in-depth reviews of other bike computers, so you can get a good idea of the competition as well.

My Garmin Edge 500 has stopped working so I am in the market for a new one. I will probably go for a 520 Plus, but I am open to recommendations for one of the 800 or 1000 series if one of those seem worth the price. Pros? Cons? Opinions?

I've been on a couple online threads about recent 520 and 520 Plus deals, and the recommendations have been pretty consistent...spend the little extra for the 530. Very few reasons to spend the extra money to the 830/1030 unless you need the special features or bigger screen, and the 530 pretty much does everything 99% of us want/need with the added benefit of being one of the more reliable Garmin units (520 has been rock solid for me, while lots of comments on 520 Plus not so good). My 2 cents -JamesW On Sep 17, 2020 8:54 AM, Nick Laszlo <laszlonick@...> wrote:

I concur with Jay, with the additional thought that the 530 screen is brighter, yet the battery drains slower than the 520 (in my experience).

Donna,
West pointed me to the 530 and I have been very happy with it... it has a great battery life and it works... I had a touch screen and ultimately I did not like it especially in the winter with long finger gloves... the 530 is controlled with buttons. I strongly recommend this unit over the 520+
