moderated Plans - FFBC Thursday Morning Coffee Ride Bike to Work

Lori Sommer

Hello Thursday Morning Coffee Riders/Bike to Work Riders, Matt, Sonny and Geno from the City of Fremont,

I've posted the FFBC ride listing for this Thursday's Bike to Work Ride aka Tour de Energizer Station.  We will meet early, join the ride with the City of Fremont for a few miles then head down to Tesla and loop back with a coffee stop at the end.  We will try to reach five energizer stations and possibly two more if they are open late.

Come join us for a fun day and see what Rob has planned.

WhereACE Fremont Station (37260 Fremont Blvd) (map)
DescriptionMileage: 30
Elevation gain: 500'

Rob worked hard to come up with a route to maximize the number of Energizer Stations while also joining up with the City of Fremont Employee Group Ride.

Centripedal (3636 Thornton Ave, Fremont) has given permission for us to park in their lot and we can also park along Moraine Ave/Bonde Way.  We will meet at the first Energizer Station hosted by Centripedal at the ACE Fremont Train Station (37260 Fremont Blvd) at 7:30AM and be ready to roll at 7:45AM.  To access the train station from Bonde Way use the shortcut through the parking lot where there is an opening in the fence to the train station near Darleen's Dog Grooming.

Late arrivals can meet us along the route!

https://ridewithgps.com/routes/27263887

We will ride to the start of the City of Fremont Ride which meets at 8:00AM and rolls at 8:15AM.  We will join their ride which stops at the Energizer stations hosted by Kaiser Permanente, Washington Hospital (BART West Entrance) and City of Fremont/REI (BART East Entrance).  We won't dally at these BART stations because we have somewhere to go.  We will try to make it to the Energizer Station hosted by Tesla in south Fremont.

If we don't make it to Tesla before they close at 9:30AM we will head to Panera if we need coffee, otherwise we will wait for coffee at Suju's at the end. There is an option to take a shortcut to save 5 miles.

We sure hope you can join us!

Extreme temperatures, construction or the whim of the ride leaders may modify the route. Rain cancels, check https://ffbc.groups.io/g/info/topics, email or call! me!

Join us on Tuesday, May 8th for our May club meeting. We will have a presentation on a bicycle tour to Vietnam. I'm eager to find out how it was to cycle in Vietnam. I would have thought that there weren't the greatest roads there. Also, how were the drivers? I guess I'll have to wait until next week to find out!

For reference, the next meetings will be:
  • August: Dinner and a movie! Come and we'll watch the film "Le Ride," a contemporary film that retraces the route of the 1928 Tour de France.
  • September: Matt Bomberg, Senior Traffic Engineer for the City of Fremont.

As always, the meeting will be held at:

Fremont Adult School, Room N6 (all the way in the back, in the back row of buildings)
4700 Calaveras Ave,
Fremont, CA 94538

Hope to see you there!

moderated Treasure Island - Thursday Morning Coffee Ride

Lori Sommer

Hello Thursday Morning Coffee Riders,
We are going on a trip!  Mark you calendars for Treasure Island on the last Thursday in May.  We've added a coffee stop on Treasure Island so we can relax and enjoy the view (even if it is just a view of the fog - thanks Ken) as long as the weather is decent.  Shiba Ramen in the Public Market is yummy and the new Mexican place should be open now too.
Hope you can join us.

WhereFremont BART Station, Fremont, CA 94536, USA (map)
DescriptionLength: 20 miles; Elevation: 650 feet; Terrain: 2,3 Pace: T,M Join us as we search for adventure on Treasure Island! The first part of our adventure will be taking all the bikes on BART; please spread out into different cars and don't forget your Clipper Card if you have one. There are two Richmond bound trains from Fremont, the first leaves at 9:00AM and the second at 9:15AM. Ken will be on the first train that arrives at Ashby Station at 9:46AM and I will be on the second arriving at 10:01AM. Everyone will gather at the Ashby BART station in Berkeley, 10:00AM on the west side (toward the parking lot), rolling about 10:15AM. If anyone wants to drive, please park near the Ashby BART station and join us there or meet us ACROSS THE STREET from IKEA at the trailhead, which is well marked and very obvious. We will be coming down Shellmound St. and turning onto the trail about 10:30-10:40. It will be too congested to sign people in right there, so we will do that at the first regroup at the porta-potties before we climb the bridge. At the top of the bridge, there is a beautiful new vista point (mile 7.2, porta-potties) where we will have a long regroup and take some pictures. There is a short pitchy part up to the top of Yerba Buena before descending down onto Treasure Island. We will ride around Treasure Island, take pictures and hopefully stop for a quick cup of coffee and enjoy the view of San Francisco. After coffee we will climb back up to Yerba Buena, descend the Bay Bridge and lunch at the Public Market in Emeryville.(http://publicmarketemeryville.com/directory/) and then take BART home from the Ashby Station. Lunch probably won't be until 12:30PM or 1:00PM. This is a leisurely ride with lots of stopping to look at the sights and take pictures. We will stay together, no route sheet will be provided but you can print the ridewithgps route sheet we will send out via email and Dale will be sweeping with his array (hoard) of GPSes (and yes, I had to look up the plural of GPS). Hello Thursday Morning Coffee Riders,

I will be out this Thursday but Ken will lead the group for me.  Thanks, Ken!  Please join him for the ride to Alum Rock. I will be back the following Thursday.

WhereREI, 43962 Fremont Blvd, Fremont, CA 94538, USA (map)
DescriptionLength: 34 miles
Terrain: 2, 3; Pace: T, M

Meet at 9:00 for a 9:15 start.  We are riding to Alum Rock. Since REI isn't open use the facilities at Starbucks or wait until we reach the Alviso Adobe in Milpitas.

We will ride along the foothills and once we get into the park, there are options to head straight to the Visitor's Center or climb the Inspiration Loop and/or Miguelita Road. Also, you don't have to go all the way to the park...you can turn early to coffee to reduce milage significantly. If you are a slow climber, but want to do the extra climbing, please be considerate of the group and turn around when you see the faster riders returning OR bring yourself to coffee on your own.

We will have lunch at Noah's Bagels/Starbucks ($) before heading back on a flat route, with no regroups.

Extreme temperatures, park closure, construction or the whim of the ride leader may modify the route. Rain cancels, check https://ffbc.groups.io/g/info/topics, email or text me.

Hello Thursday Morning Coffee Riders,

We will have a pretty route tomorrow!  I used Ken's Ruby Hills route (originally lifted from Al) and I changed the coffee stop to Noah's Bagels/Starbucks option in Livermore.  29miles, 1,000' feet of climbing.  I'll bring  the route sheets.

DescriptionLength: 25-35 miles
Terrain: 2, 3; Pace: T, M

Meet at 9:00 for a 9:15 start.  This week the route starts from the gravel lot across from the Sunol Train Station.

There are lots of places we can go and sometimes a portion of the climbing is optional and mileage can be reduced. Our favorite destinations include the Corner Bakery or Peet's via Kilkare, the water tower and Bernal Bump or maybe out to Panama Red Coffee in Livermore by way of Sycamore Grove/Holdener Park or the climbs out by Signal Hill and the fun descent on Croak Road with lunch at Panera in Livermore. Another favorite is Denica's in Dublin via Windemere. Bring $ for coffee or lunch.

Extreme temperatures, construction or the whim of the ride leader may modify the route. Rain cancels, check https://ffbc.groups.io/g/info/topics, email or call me.

Hello members.  I have a typo on the date for the Women's Social Ride.  It is 5/27/18, NOT 5/24/18 as listed in my original email.

Donna Kaplan has stepped up to take the M pace leader for the Calaveras CW ride on Saturday, 5/5/18.

Here are the rides that are still in need of ride leaders:
1)  Sunday, 5/27/18: Women's Social Ride
2)  Saturday, 5/5/18:  Calaveras CW - need a B pace leader
3)  Saturday, 5/12/18: Saturday Tour de Fremont Hills - need a M pace

Thanks!

Dear Monday Morning Recovery Riders,

The weather reports for tomorrow do not look good (well, not good for bike riding, but good for the drought.)  It’s looking like there will be rain for at least a couple of hours in the morning, perhaps more.  We will check the reports again in the morning and will send out confirmation or cancelation by 6:30am.

Subject: [discussion] Route sheets for Workers Ride

Hi Freewheelers,

Attached are the route sheets for the Workers Rides on Sunday. Since Calaveras will not be open for us on Sunday all route sheets except the Fun Ride (25 mil) route sheet are significantly different to the actual Primavera route sheets. For riders of the Fun Ride please let me know if there are any errors on the route sheet. If there are issues with the route marking please let David Harcos (dharcos@...) know.

For riders of 100M, 100K and 85M routes I have attached 2 sets of route sheets to this email, the first set is the cue sheet generated from RideWithGPS, the second is the actual route sheets for the Primavera. The RideWithGPS route sheets will get you all the way around the Workers Rides but it’d be really nice if a few people used tested the actual Primavera Route sheets starting from the Sunol rest stop (where the Workers and Primavera routes converge).

Remember to please print out your route sheet(s) before the ride on Sunday since it looks like we only have a confirmed ride leader for the 85 mile route. Thanks Julie G.!

Happy riding!

Hello Thursday Morning Coffee Riders,

It looks like we will have no rain during the ride tomorrow!  However, the winds are forecast to 20mph by noon and 22mph by 1PM.  Since we are going across the bay, I plan to do a shorter ride (27mi, 500').  The coffee stop is Prolific Oven.  If the winds are too bad, we may cut it short and also do a coffee break rather than a lunch break.  You are welcome to park at the bridge (to cut about 6 miles) and you won't  to deal with the wind on Marshlands at the end of the ride. I may do that also - meaning I will drive to the start, sign everyone in, drive to the end of the bridge, sign anyone in, get on my bike and meet everyone at the benches on the other side of the bridge.

See you bright and early!

Lori

I am cancelling today’s M ride.  It has been raining all night, and although it looks like it will stop at 8:00 in Fremont and 9:00 in San Jose, the reports are now saying possible showers starting up again around noon.  Tim O’Hara will be sending out his decision about the B ride shortly.

This ride now becomes a Show and Go.  If you do decide to ride, be careful—there is a lot of debris after this storm and the roads are very wet.

See you next month.
