I’ll have to give this some thought, Julie.  In spite of being a relatively new member of FFBC, I have in fact lived in Fremont for nearly 2 years now and know of some safe & interesting routes that I have done dozens of times and have never spotted you guys, so I might be able to come up with something new.  I just need some time to come up with something good.  You’re right in that many  Bay Area roads are indeed utter crap (I have a titanium plate on my left collarbone as proof of that) but the danger of crashing can be lessened greatly through avoidance of the most egregious roads, which unfortunately can change dramatically from one week to the next because of erosion and seismic influences.

No place in the world is a perfect panacea for cycling (south of France comes close).  We for instance have great weather compared to most of the world, but not such good roads.  Other places have great roads, but you can only ride on them safely 6 months out of the year because of harsh weather.  It’s a mixed bag.  One of the things that I look for riding in the Bay Area on a beautiful day like Tuesday is that if I notice a glaring scarcity of hardcore cyclists on the road that I’m on (other than the group I’m riding with), that’s always a red flag for me!

Let’s see what I come up with.  My big problem with being group leader is that I’m lousy with directions, but I guess there’s a solution for that too.  I could ride with GPS and a single earbud in one ear, that way I wouldn’t have to take my eyes off the “obstacle course” that I’m riding on.  Route sheets are useless for me because I’m extremely far-sighted!

See you guys next week.  By the way, except for when we’re riding on lousy roads, I really enjoy riding with FFBC.  You guys are one of the most pleasant clubs I’ve ever ridden with.  You’re good people! 😃

Ride leaders select or create the routes so that’s the best way to make sure you,  as part of FFBC group, get to ride what you’d like to ride!!
it’s hard to be prescient about every road we ride - as you noted, California roads in general are in far worse shape than any non-California roads.
I wish we could transport outside California each week to ride!

Fortunately we were riding northbound but the holes were large enough we all noted them. While they were circled with white paint, possibly to mark for repair, I doubt a descending bicyclist would see them in sufficient time to avoid as they are in the shade.
Northbound had holes also in shaded sections but not as extensive and we were ascending so more time to react. Most of us still hit a few though. Luckily no mishaps.
Be careful out there.

Lori Sommer

Hello Thursday Riders,

Someone let me know they were a bit confused about the start time because it says 10:00am meeting at Fremont BART station.  SORRY!

Looking at the posting for tomorrow's Treasure Island Ride - there are a different times depending on how you are arriving.  Most people are meeting at Fremont BART and the two trains leave at 9:03 and 9:18.  Some are driving or taking BART from different locations.  The ride "officially" meets at the Ashby BART Station in Berkeley at 10:00AM.  We will pick up riders across from IKEA about 10:35.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Lori

DescriptionLength: 20 miles;
Elevation: 650 feet;

Terrain: 2,3 Pace: T,M

Join us as we search for adventure on Treasure Island! The first part of our adventure will be taking all the bikes on BART; please spread out into different cars and don't forget your Clipper Card if you have one. There are two Richmond bound trains from Fremont, the first leaves at 9:03AM and the second at 9:18AM. Ken will be on the first train that arrives at Ashby Station at 9:49AM and I will be on the second arriving at 10:04AM. Everyone will gather at the Ashby BART station in Berkeley, 10:00AM on the West side (toward the parking lot), rolling about 10:20AM. If anyone wants to drive, please park near the Ashby BART station and join us there or meet us ACROSS THE STREET from IKEA at the trailhead, which is well marked and very obvious.

We will be coming down Shellmound St. and turning onto the trail about 10:35-10:45. It will be too congested to sign people in right there, so we will do that at the first regroup at the porta-potties before we climb the bridge. At the top of the bridge, there is a beautiful new vista point (mile 7.2, porta-potties) where we will have a long regroup and take some pictures. There is a short pitchy part up to the top of Yerba Buena before descending down onto Treasure Island.

We will ride around Treasure Island, take pictures and hopefully stop for a quick cup of coffee at Mersea (http://www.mersea.restaurant) and enjoy the view of San Francisco. After coffee we will climb back up to Yerba Buena, descend the Bay Bridge and lunch at the Public Market in Emeryville.(http://publicmarketemeryville.com/directory/) and then take BART home from the Ashby Station.

Lunch probably won't be until 12:30PM or 1:00PM. This is a leisurely ride with lots of stopping to look at the sights and take pictures. We will stay together, no route sheet will be provided but you can print the ridewithgps route sheet we will send out via email and Dale will be sweeping with his array (hoard) of GPSes (and yes, I had to look up the plural of GPS).

moderated SAVE the Date June 28 - Cindy's Farewell Ride/Potluck

Lori Sommer

Good Morning FFBC,

As many of you may have heard, our awesome friend and riding buddy is leaving for the bright lights and sounds of Las Vegas!  Well, she is moving to be closer to her future first grandchild so maybe a single nightlight and lullabies will be more appropriate.  Before she goes, let's get together for a Bon Voyage Ride/Potluck on Thursday, June 28th.

Please send me memories you have of Cindy and maybe a pic of you with her.  Maybe you just want to say thank you!  Please email me (with Cindy as the subject line) and we can put it all together as a going away gift to her.  If you'd like to make a small donation towards a gift please give it to me, Randy or Julie Fuller in an envelope.  I will also bring a card and donation envelope to the Thursday rides.

Please fill out this google document (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1WSdxjRsTRRWvvpyzGONLN5K-iH-ZinYI1pswM3nxQeU/edit?usp=sharing) or send me your potluck item and I can fill it in for you so we don't have 30 drinks and no food.

Thanks so much!

Cindy Maxwell, our longtime friend and ride leader is moving to Vegas in July!  Cindy came up with the idea of the LAP rides, was a Cinderella Ride Leader and always led interesting rides over the years to Rose Gardens, Labrynths, Pottery Shows and Chalk Art Shows.  We will miss her VERY much.  Come to the ride and the potluck to say goodbye. If you can't attend the ride and would just like to join the potluck that is fine too.

Let's give Cindy a good send off.  Please send me memories you have of Cindy and maybe a pic  of you with her.  Maybe you just want to say thank you!  Please email me (with Cindy as the subject line) and we can put it all together as a going away gift to her.  If you'd like to make a small donation towards a gift please give it to me, Randy or Julie in an envelope.  I will also bring a card and donation envelope to the Thursday rides.

Meet at 9:00AM in Newark.  Please park on Channel Drive, the other side of the tennis courts or at Lakeshore Park.  We will start the ride from my house.  You can drop off your potluck item and use the restroom too.  Please text me for the address.

Ken will come up with a route and lead the ride and Julie will sweep.  We will post it ahead of time so check back.  There won't be a mid-ride coffee stop so bring a snack.

Extreme temperatures, construction or the whim of the ride leader may modify the route. Rain cancels, check https://ffbc.groups.io/g/info/topics, email or call me.

moderated June Ride Calendar

Dennis Dong

Greetings All!  I hope everybody had a good weekend remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our great country.  It's that time again to get ride leaders for the rides.  In addition to the regular scheduled rides, the Pizza Rides are starting in June (every Wednesday).  Andy Sass will be leading the June Pizza Rides.  I am in the process of updating the descriptions of the June Pizza Rides.

It appears that the Tues Hills Rides, Wed Mid-Week Rides, Thurs Coffee Rides and Fri Bike Club Rides are covered.  Here is the list of rides that are in need of ride leaders:
1)  Sunday, 6/24:  Women's Social
2)  Monday: MMRR (I don't have leaders listed for June)
3)  Saturday, 6/9: Tour de Fremont Hills
4)  Saturday, 6/23: Calaveras CCW

Please let me know if any of you can lead any of these rides.  Also, let me know if any corrections need to be made.

Thanks & ride safe!

Thursday Morning Coffee Riders,
Tomorrow we will do Kilkare out and back then to Happy Valley, Bernal Bump, etc to Peet’s on Main Street in Pleasanton. Shortcuts available.

Thursday Morning Coffee Ride - Sunol Start
WhenThu, May 24, 9am – 1pm

DescriptionLength: 25-35 miles
Terrain: 2, 3; Pace: T, M

Meet at 9:00 for a 9:15 start.  This week the route starts from the gravel lot across from the Sunol Train Station.

There are lots of places we can go and sometimes a portion of the climbing is optional and mileage can be reduced. Our favorite destinations include the Corner Bakery or Peet's via Kilkare, the water tower and Bernal Bump or maybe out to Panama Red Coffee in Livermore by way of Sycamore Grove/Holdener Park or the climbs out by Signal Hill and the fun descent on Croak Road with lunch at Panera in Livermore. Another favorite is Denica's in Dublin via Windemere. Bring $ for coffee or lunch.

Extreme temperatures, construction or the whim of the ride leader may modify the route. Rain cancels, check https://ffbc.groups.io/g/info/topics, email or call me.
