The closure of Calaveras Rd has been extended to November 2nd and scheduled to open to all traffic on Saturday, November 3rd.  Soooo, the October Saturday rides; Calaveras CW and Calaveras CCW have been changed again.  Check the calendar for the route information.

The regular scheduled rides are all covered with ride leaders.  Thanks to the members who stepped up.

The Mt Hamilton Ride is scheduled for Saturday, Oct 20th.  We will need volunteers to be ride leaders and SAGs.  Please let me know if you can help.

Thanks and ride safe!

I think the Devout Coffee building used to be a bike shop. And the coffee is fantastic. I will travel past several Starbucks and Peets, and even Philz, to get to Devout.

Please bring some snacks and plenty of water.  Our "coffee" stop will be at the end of the ride at the convenience store on the corner of Niles Canyon and Paloma. I can't promise coffee at the stop though.  We can always drive to coffee in Fremont.

There are lots of places we can go and sometimes a portion of the climbing is optional and mileage can be reduced. Our favorite destinations include the Corner Bakery or Peet's via Kilkare, the water tower and Bernal Bump or maybe out to Panama Red Coffee in Livermore by way of Sycamore Grove/Holdener Park or the climbs out by Signal Hill and the fun descent on Croak Road with lunch at Panera in Livermore. Another favorite is Denica's in Dublin via Windemere. Bring $ for coffee or lunch.

Why not follow the M ride and do Calv CCW to the false summit and back?  We can even add a hard hitters version that would include the steep pitch up Old Calv

I’m getting rid of a Yakima Spare Time spare tire bicycle rack. The only cost is helping me take it off my Jeep. This is the precursor to the Spare Ride Bike rack. I only have the short adapter for mounting it, so if you have 35’s you’ll have to order the long adapter.

Good riding

The Sunol Citizens Advisory Council will be discussing this project at their meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 19.

Agenda item 7.

There’s a group in Sunol that is pushing for adding bike lanes to the bridge, as well as roundabouts at either end (which would help slow down vehicle traffic when it’s not congested).

To: Niles Canyon <Niles_Canyon@...>

Hello Niles Canyon Fans,

Caltrans recently held a meeting in Sunol regarding their proposed Arroyo de la Laguna Bridge project. The notification for the meeting was sent August 1, 2018 for the August 2 event - see below for original notice text:

  • The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is issuing this notice to invite the public to a  scoping meeting to discuss and provide input for the proposed Arroyo de la Laguna Bridge Project. The purpose of the proposed project is to mitigate bridge scour, improve the bridge’s structural integrity by providing seismic improvements, and improve safety by upgrading the bridge rails to meet current safety standards.

Many citizens were quite unhappy with the extremely short notice, leading Caltrans to extend the deadline to comment on the proposed project to October 2, 2018.

Please consider learning about the proposed project and commenting on the planned options. Below is the link to Caltrans’ Niles Canyon webpage - Arroyo de la Laguna is number 4 on the list at the top of the page - if you click that link, you’ll see info on the project. A PDF of the presentation from the Sunol meeting is attached. Two of the options to be considered involve widening the bridge.

It's good to be aware of all proposed Caltrans project activity in the canyon. The cumulative effects of all of these projects will surely affect traffic density and flow as well as quality of life for all who love this scenic, historic resource.
