Monday Morning Recovery Ride

Robert Tashjian

I will be leading the MMRR for the next three weeks. Specialties is closed and Tous les Jour didn’t have indoor or outdoor seating yet. We will be riding some different routes for the upcoming Mondays. All of the routes will still have ‘pickups’ at Stevenson/Paseo and S.Grimmer/Paseo.

  • This Monday, 5/17, we’ll go to Starbucks McCarthy Ranch. They have tables outside, limited indoor seating, and open bathrooms, 37.6mi, 697 ft.

              https://ridewithgps.com/routes/36016054

The route skips the turn into Coyote Hills, for those who want more miles, you can turn into the park and do Nike/bay side of Coyote Hills.

  • Monday 5/24, we’ll go to Panera 1st st. in San Jose. I’ll send the finalized route to the list next week. It will be 38-40 miles.

  • Monday 5/31 will be a special Memorial Day ride clockwise around the South Bay returning across the Dumbo. Route to be finalized, but there will be a stop at either the (newly reopened/only remaining) Specialties or a personal favorite, Roger’s Deli & Donuts, both in Mt. View, both with large patio seating areas. About 42-45 miles.

Email me with your mobile and emergency contact info and I’ll sign you in for this Monday’s (5/17) MMRR.

MMRR is ON!

Robert Tashjian

The Monday Morning Recovery Ride is on for May 10. Email me your mobile and emergency numbers and where you will start the ride and I will sign you in.

Meet across Isherwood from the Isherwood staging area for an 8:45 departure. We’ll ride at a M pace. We’ll stop for rider pickups at the usual regroups: the gas station on Stevenson/Paseo and the corner of South Grimmer/Paseo(Weibel). See the calendar for times. Route will be the old familiar favorite Panera, with a side venture to Krispy Kreme for a vaccination donut if desired. We will discuss some options for future alternate routes and stops.

Riders must follow California and County mask and distancing guidelines.  Ride leaders are not responsible for enforcing these guidelines.  It is incumbent on riders to follow these guidelines to keep our cycling community safe.

Re: low psi ok for 28mm gatorskins?

+1 to what Robert says.

Here's my story. Dunno if it'll help you, but... here goes...

I used to do gobs of commuting on 25mm Gatorskins between Los Altos and Fremont. Overall, I had fewer flats when I would (a) use Mr. Tuffy or StopFlats2 and (b) pump the pressure up pretty high (like 105psi). More recently my commute changed and I can get away with lower pressures (~85psi).

A lower pressure is more comfortable but makes you more susceptible to pinch flats.

With that said, these days when I do intervals on Marshlands Rd I drop the pressure to 60-70psi for the comfort. I can get away with it because I generally know where all the "potholes" are located and avoid them. I wouldn't do less than 75-80psi for a long ride on unknown roads. (I'm 195 lbs... and again, this is 25mm tires).

The Gatorskins (and Gatorblah, blah, blah follow-ons) are clinchers, not tubeless, so you want to run them at higher pressure than equivalent tubeless tires. The pressure kinda depends on several factors:

How heavy are you (and the bike)? This is probably the most important one.

How wide is the rim? A 20mm internal width rim can (and should) run lower pressure than a 15mm internal width rim.

How aggressive are you?

How bad is the surface you’re riding on?

You generally want more pressure in the rear tire than the front. If you are 140lb on a 20lb bike with 20mm rims, probably. If you are 200lbs on a 20lb bike with 15mm rims, probably asking for a flat.

Most rim manufacturers have a pressure calculator hidden away on their websites somewhere, probably best to check with whoever made your rims.

Hello,
I've found that if I ride 28mm gatorskins at 60-80psi I get much better comfort, grip and downhill control.  Am I asking for trouble going this low or is it common these days?

Thanks,
Ted

What are the specs for the tire, i.e. what is the recommended pressure?

MMRR is on

Robert Tashjian

The Monday Morning Recovery Ride is on for April 26, pending the weather. Right now it looks like the rain will stop late Sunday afternoon and should mostly clear before Monday morning. I will post a final go/no go by 7am Monday. Email me your mobile and emergency numbers and where you will start the ride. We will not sign in on site.

Meet across Isherwood from the Isherwood staging area at 8:30 for an 8:45 departure. We’ll stop for rider pickups at the usual regroups (gas station on Stevenson/Paseo and the corner of South Grimmer/Paseo). Route will be the same as last week with a coffee stop at Panera:

https://ridewithgps.com/routes/31759143

For those with vax cards, bring them or a phone facsimile and we’ll stop at Krispy Kreme for a Vaccination Donut.

Masks must be worn at the start and regroups and wherever you are riding within 6 ft of another.

For those riding the MMRR be careful when you turn right onto Willow from Enterprise Drive. It looks like they are doing shoulder work along there.
