Hi Lori,

Thanks for the TMCR today.  Great to see you and the FFBC gang as always.  I hope you’re feeling better at home now.  I feel a lot better now after a shower and an IPA 🍺

Re cycling in Jao\pan:

I highly recommend the following:
  • Touring in various regions of Japan: https://www.cyclingjapan.jp/  I have done five or six tours with them and they are the best tours I’ve experienced anywhere in the world.
  • City tours Tokyo: https://www.tokyocycling.jp/.  I’ve taken two day tours with them in Tokyo.  I’ve been to Tokyo many times but these tours gave me a whole new perspective.
I have some of my experiences with them on my blog with more details… https://jimsgreatcyclingadventures.wordpress.com/

Tuesday Show & Go

Has this ride been happening??

I showed up at 9:02 a.m., and no one was around.

I would like to ride at least short distances on Tuesdays -- let me know if anyone else is interested.

I rode, solo, around Coyote Hills; it was beautiful, as usual.  It was GREAT to see a crew removing the roots along Paseo Padre Pkwy. in that area, on at least one spot, as I rode by.  (I thanked them!)

Also fun to discover (for those that hadn't been there in a while):  Nice pit toilets at the quarry parking lot & visitor center.

For those that don't know me, I am an experienced, but T-M speed rider who is reawakening her pandemic-pansied muscles, training for my favorite fund-raiser, the Agony Ride on July 23-24.

Thanks, club!  (Yes, I finally gave up on the electronic enrollment/renewal, and mailed in my stuff.)

WhenThu, 1 July, 08:30 – 12:30

DescriptionLength: 34 miles (with shortcuts of -17mi, -7mi, -5mi, -3mi)
Terrain: 2, 3; Pace: T, M

Since REI isn't open, please use the facilities at Starbucks or wait until we reach the more familiar Jose Higuera Adobe in Milpitas.

We are riding to Alum Rock along the beautiful foothills. This is a route with lots of flexibility -  to push yourself or take it easy and stretch your legs - whichever you like. I've updated the regroup point to Jose Higuera Adobe at mile 6.  Take Shortcut 1 directly to coffee and cut your mileage by 17.  Shortcut 2 cuts out 7 miles if you choose to ride to the park entrance (restrooms) then turn around..  Or you may go directly to the set of restrooms at the Youth Center and cut out 5 miles and significant climbing using Shortcut 3.  You may continue on the route, decide to skip Miguelito and only do Inspiration Loop (Shortcut 4, -3miles) or you may be in great shape and do the whole 34miles!  Please review the route sheet in advance and be prepared to follow your plan as I won't be chasing anyone down.  Better yet, find a friend with the same plan and stick together. Let me know if you have any questions. No one left behind.

If you are a slow climber like me, but want to do climbing, consider turning around when you see the faster riders returning OR bring yourself to coffee on your own.

We will have lunch at Starbucks/Noah's Bagels ($) before heading back on a flat route, with no regroups.

Here's the route:  https://ridewithgps.com/routes/36345433 Please print the attached cue sheet and put my cell number in your phone in advance.

Extreme temperatures, park closure, construction, rain, poor air quality or the whim of the ride leader may modify or cancel the route. Check here for updates: info@ffbc.groups.io

Thursday Morning Coffee Ride

Lori Sommer

Hello!

Last week, I was surprised to see so many people show up despite the 95deg temperature by the time we finished the ride.  It will be a much more comfortable temperature tomorrow and we are riding close to home so everyone is welcome to make the ride their own.  Show up along the way, take options to go directly to coffee, skip lots of climbing or skip just the steepest climb and/or leave early - just let me know.  I hope to see your smiling face at Sprouts, at 9AM.  Thanks to Ken for reviewing the route sheet - no errors this week!

Heads up for next week and the rest of the summer, we will be meeting at 8:30AM to avoid some of the heat.

Wear a FFBC club jersey and let's stay close to home. We will meet at Sprouts located in the former Raley's Shopping Center (6399 Jarvis Ave, Newark).

The specific route for this  ride is: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/36509502 We will do a mostly flat route until mile 11 where there is an option to go straight to coffee.  The route will continue up the flatter side of Pine and up Hunter to the top.  There is an option to u-turn and head to coffee at the regroup point.  The rest of the route does the "Animals Backwards" to Curtner where there is an option to go straight to the top to wait.  The regular route will go up Zapotec.  Although it is not on the route sheet, riders may want to do additional climbing up Yakima. Then we will head to Mission Coffee and do a flat route home with no regroups.  No one left behind.

We will mainly stay in Fremont but ride through Newark and sometimes Union City and Milpitas on occasion. Sometimes the climbing is optional. We always stop for coffee ($) and riders are welcome to head back on their own.

Extreme temperatures, park closure, construction, rain, poor air quality or the whim of the ride leader may modify or cancel the route. Check here for updates: info@ffbc.groups.io

Hello,

I'm looking forward to seeing you tomorrow.  Please arrive early and sign in promptly so we can roll at 9:15AM.  If you are running late, text me and you can either catch up with us or drive further out on the route and join us along the way.

It will be hot tomorrow!  The temperature forecast in Milpitas is 72 deg F at 9AM, reaching a high of 91 deg F at 1PM.    Please pick a route that is comfortable for you. I will NOT expect faster riders  to wait at the regroup points for the slowest riders, since slower riders may want to do shorter routes, especially due to the heat.

Welcome!!  You are all welcome! This is the first official TMCR in more than a year and we have some catching up to do and hopefully some new friends to meet.  This can be a very easygoing ride or a more difficult one; it is your choice.  Meet along the way, do shortcuts, ride ahead, leave early - just let me know.  This route will repeat in two weeks  and then monthly so you can measure your improvement over time.

Since REI isn't open, please use the facilities at Starbucks or wait until we reach the Alviso Adobe in Milpitas.

Sunday Social

David Walker

Just to let everyone know, the Sunday Social will happen on Sunday, June 13. We'll meet at 9:00 and roll at 9:15. The pace will be "no rider left behind." Sign-up will use the normal sign-in sheets. There is no need to reply to this posting with rider info.

Last month I said I was going to try a new route, but I didn't get my act together quickly enough so we'll simply do the Alviso ride as listed on the ride calendar. Next month though!

As a reminder, we'll meet at:
Starbucks, 46655 Mission Blvd & Warm Springs Blvd, Fremont, CA 94539

This is the Starbucks in Warm Springs across the street from Safeway (not to be confused with the Starbucks inside of Safeway).

The route is as follows:

https://ridewithgps.com/routes/31563209

I've also attached a pdf of the route sheet. If you want it on the ride, print it out before you come as I will not be providing them.

Hope to see you Sunday.

Re: Memorial Day MMRR - Extended Edition

Some announcements about tomorrows ride:
- It will be quite warm tomorrow, although we should miss the worst of it
since we will be so close to the Bay. Bring lots of water and whatever you
need to deal with the heat.
- It will be a large group, so we'll have fairly frequent regroups. I'll
make sure to announce the next regroup at each regroup.
- The times listed for each of the pickup places are roll times. Please be
sure to be ready to roll on time. Note that the Chevron & Weibel times are 5
min earlier than normal.
- Roger's will reserve donuts & coffee for us.

See you tomorrow,

Castro Ranch Road closed to bicycles until mid-July

Donna Luporini Kaplan

To: cyclists who have been thinking about riding “The Three Bears”

There is a 1.5 mile stretch of Castro Ranch Road, between Olinda Rd (one block east of San Pablo Dam Road) and just beyond the Carriage Hills South subdivision, that will be closed to cyclists until July 18, 2021.  Until mid-July, cyclists who really want to ride the Three Bears can only access Bear Creek Road from Camino Pablo (Orinda) or from the eastern direction (Martinez).

I sent notice about this stretch of road—stating that it was very hazardous to cyclists and an accident waiting to happen—to Bike East Bay last October and did not receive a reply. I tried again in mid-March and heard back right away with apologies. Dave Campbell, Advocacy Director at Bike East Bay, subsequently reached out to various agencies, and it took just two days for us to hear back from the City of Richmond Infrastructure Administrator, saying that repaving this stretch of road had been planned but held up because it was such a big job. Of course I know that I (and Dave Campbell) didn’t make this happen, but I like to think that perhaps we pushed it up on the calendar.

I will miss riding the Bears, but I am very happy about this outcome.

Donna Kaplan
