Sunday Social
David Walker
Just to let everyone know, the Sunday Social will happen on Sunday, June 13. We'll meet at 9:00 and roll at 9:15. The pace will be "no rider left behind." Sign-up will use the normal sign-in sheets. There is no need to reply to this posting with rider info.
Last month I said I was going to try a new route, but I didn't get my act together quickly enough so we'll simply do the Alviso ride as listed on the ride calendar. Next month though! As a reminder, we'll meet at: Starbucks, 46655 Mission Blvd & Warm Springs Blvd, Fremont, CA 94539
This is the Starbucks in Warm Springs across the street from Safeway (not to be confused with the Starbucks inside of Safeway). The route is as follows: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/31563209 I've also attached a pdf of the route sheet. If you want it on the ride, print it out before you come as I will not be providing them. Hope to see you Sunday. David Walker

Re: Memorial Day MMRR - Extended Edition
Robert Tashjian
Some announcements about tomorrows ride:
- It will be quite warm tomorrow, although we should miss the worst of it since we will be so close to the Bay. Bring lots of water and whatever you need to deal with the heat. - It will be a large group, so we'll have fairly frequent regroups. I'll make sure to announce the next regroup at each regroup. - The times listed for each of the pickup places are roll times. Please be sure to be ready to roll on time. Note that the Chevron & Weibel times are 5 min earlier than normal. - Roger's will reserve donuts & coffee for us. See you tomorrow, Rob --- Robert Tashjian rob@... The route is paved except for one short stretch of hard pack dirt trail near East Palo Alto. Coffee & goodies at mile 25 at Rogers Donuts and Deli in Mountain View. Here is the rwgps route, I will not have printed route sheets available, so make sure you load it in your bike computer or print out your own cue sheet. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/36166715 We will meet at the usual places (Isherwood Staging, Paseo-Stevenson Chevron, Paseo-S. Castro Ranch Road closed to bicycles until mid-July
Donna Luporini Kaplan
To: cyclists who have been thinking about riding “The Three Bears”
There is a 1.5 mile stretch of Castro Ranch Road, between Olinda Rd (one block east of San Pablo Dam Road) and just beyond the Carriage Hills South subdivision, that will be closed to cyclists until July 18, 2021. Until mid-July, cyclists who really want to ride the Three Bears can only access Bear Creek Road from Camino Pablo (Orinda) or from the eastern direction (Martinez).
I sent notice about this stretch of road—stating that it was very hazardous to cyclists and an accident waiting to happen—to Bike East Bay last October and did not receive a reply. I tried again in mid-March and heard back right away with apologies. Dave Campbell, Advocacy Director at Bike East Bay, subsequently reached out to various agencies, and it took just two days for us to hear back from the City of Richmond Infrastructure Administrator, saying that repaving this stretch of road had been planned but held up because it was such a big job. Of course I know that I (and Dave Campbell) didn’t make this happen, but I like to think that perhaps we pushed it up on the calendar.
I will miss riding the Bears, but I am very happy about this outcome.

Monday Morning Recovery Ride
Robert Tashjian
I will be leading the MMRR for the next three weeks. Specialties is closed and Tous les Jour didn’t have indoor or outdoor seating yet. We will be riding some different routes for the upcoming Mondays. All of the routes will still have ‘pickups’ at Stevenson/Paseo and S.Grimmer/Paseo.
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/36016054 The route skips the turn into Coyote Hills, for those who want more miles, you can turn into the park and do Nike/bay side of Coyote Hills.
Email me with your mobile and emergency contact info and I’ll sign you in for this Monday’s (5/17) MMRR.

MMRR is ON!
Robert Tashjian
The Monday Morning Recovery Ride is on for May 10. Email me your mobile and emergency numbers and where you will start the ride and I will sign you in.
Meet across Isherwood from the Isherwood staging area for an 8:45 departure. We’ll ride at a M pace. We’ll stop for rider pickups at the usual regroups: the gas station on Stevenson/Paseo and the corner of South Grimmer/Paseo(Weibel). See the calendar for times. Route will be the old familiar favorite Panera, with a side venture to Krispy Kreme for a vaccination donut if desired. We will discuss some options for future alternate routes and stops.

Re: low psi ok for 28mm gatorskins?
Gabriel Beddingfield <gabrbedd@...>
+1 to what Robert says. Here's my story. Dunno if it'll help you, but... here goes... I used to do gobs of commuting on 25mm Gatorskins between Los Altos and Fremont. Overall, I had fewer flats when I would (a) use Mr. Tuffy or StopFlats2 and (b) pump the pressure up pretty high (like 105psi). More recently my commute changed and I can get away with lower pressures (~85psi). A lower pressure is more comfortable but makes you more susceptible to pinch flats. With that said, these days when I do intervals on Marshlands Rd I drop the pressure to 60-70psi for the comfort. I can get away with it because I generally know where all the "potholes" are located and avoid them. I wouldn't do less than 75-80psi for a long ride on unknown roads. (I'm 195 lbs... and again, this is 25mm tires). -gabe

Re: low psi ok for 28mm gatorskins?
Robert Tashjian
The Gatorskins (and Gatorblah, blah, blah follow-ons) are clinchers, not tubeless, so you want to run them at higher pressure than equivalent tubeless tires. The pressure kinda depends on several factors: How heavy are you (and the bike)? This is probably the most important one. How wide is the rim? A 20mm internal width rim can (and should) run lower pressure than a 15mm internal width rim. How aggressive are you? How bad is the surface you’re riding on?
You generally want more pressure in the rear tire than the front. If you are 140lb on a 20lb bike with 20mm rims, probably. If you are 200lbs on a 20lb bike with 15mm rims, probably asking for a flat.
Most rim manufacturers have a pressure calculator hidden away on their websites somewhere, probably best to check with whoever made your rims.
