Coffee lovers:  I noticed they put a sign up saying they now have an espresso machine.

M, M+ PRS riders:  Since we are also starting in Sunol tomorrow, we should also consider stopping there afterward for a drink and a bite.

Hi B riders:

Not sure when is the next time that the B ride will be starting from Sunol, how about if we gather at Bosco’s Bone and Brew, which is right where we meet at the start of the ride, and have a social snack/lunch there.  The Impossible Burger sounds good.  For those who are interested, please email me.  Have to admit that I never noticed this place after so many times parking on Main street.

Thanks!

TMCR - Reminder

Lori Sommer

Good Morning,

We are heading to Alum Rock and I'm looking forward to my first Thursday ride in probably a month.  Please join me!  We are meeting at 9:30AM at REI.

Hope to see you there.
Lori

09:30
Thursday Morning Coffee Ride - REI to Alum Rock (Jose Higuera Adobe with Shortcuts!)
WhenThu, 3 February, 09:30 – 13:30
WhereREI, 43962 Fremont Blvd, Fremont, CA 94538, USA (map)
DescriptionLength: 34 miles (with shortcuts of -17mi, -7mi, -5mi, -3mi)
Terrain: 2, 3; Pace: T, M

Since REI isn't open, please use the facilities at Starbucks or wait until we reach the more familiar Jose Higuera Adobe in Milpitas.

We are riding to Alum Rock along the beautiful foothills. This is a route with lots of flexibility -  to push yourself or take it easy and stretch your legs - whichever you like. I've updated the regroup point to Jose Higuera Adobe at mile 6.  Take Shortcut 1 directly to coffee and cut your mileage by 17.  Shortcut 2 cuts out 7 miles if you choose to ride to the park entrance (restrooms) then turn around..  Or you may go directly to the set of restrooms at the Youth Center and cut out 5 miles and significant climbing using Shortcut 3.  You may continue on the route, decide to skip Miguelito and only do Inspiration Loop (Shortcut 4, -3miles) or you may be in great shape and do the whole 34miles!  Please review the route sheet in advance and be prepared to follow your plan as I won't be chasing anyone down.  Better yet, find a friend with the same plan and stick together. Let me know if you have any questions. No one left behind.

If you want to do climbing, consider turning around when you see the faster riders returning OR bring yourself to coffee on your own.

We will have lunch at Starbucks/Noah's Bagels ($) before heading back on a flat route, with no regroups.

Here's the route:  https://ridewithgps.com/routes/36509921 Please print the attached cue sheet and put my cell number in your phone in advance.

DISCLAIMERS:
This is a no drop ride but the group can be on the larger side and will break up as we progress along the route especially as it is a T/M ride.  Riders are expected to be proficient in following their route sheet or using their GPS in case they are separated. We will wait at regroups for all riders.

Extreme temperatures, poor air quality, park closure, construction, rain and/or high winds,  or the whim of the ride leader may modify or cancel the route. Check here for updates: info@ffbc.groups.io.

Re: Professional bike fit, recommendations?

Cinnamon Miras

I responded to Gabe, but I thought I'd respond here for everyone too. Yes, I definitely want a thorough, professional bike fit. 1 hr session isn't going to cut it.

When I bought my bike the bike shop did a fit, but they had a real challenge. Admitting that my leg length didn't correspond to my arm length/reach. I also know that my left leg is 6mm shorter than my right. They never suggested a shim and at the time I was clueless. I was ok riding outside 2x/wk about 30 miles each ride. I think because I was on and off the bike with traffic lights. Switching to indoor trainer and I'm having issues with my left knee. I know my road bike has endurance geometry and my end goal is a full gran fondo. With my body parts being so unsymmetrical I want someone who has a thorough knowledge of body mechanics. I didn't pay $$$$ for my first road bike to be limited on how and where I can ride it, LOL

I also want to thank everyone who has given a suggestion, I'm sending emails asking specific questions and will then decide where to go. I'm so grateful to be apart of this group, membership is worth every penny!!! I hope to join a group ride soon.

If you are a new-ish rider... don't over-think it. Pedro, 3dbikefit, and your local bike store will all give you a fit that will avoid injuries and keep you comfortable for long hours in the saddle. And definitely try on different saddles!

I recently got a "I'm buying a new bike" Retul fit at https://www.3dbikefit.com/ and I highly recommend it. It seems to match your description. It's pretty expensive, but I feel like I got my money's worth. For example, there are several things about my posture on the bike that were pointed out... and I'm working to improve this in my training. They were also able to point out some of the "idiosyncracies" of my body that helped explain why certain things happen. I was not getting fit for a track bike, but when I applied some of the fit to my track bike... I was able to spin up to a higher RPM on the rollers without bouncing or losing control (135 -> .155). They also sell custom footbeds... and I've been very pleased with those, too.

Prior to this (2019), I had gone to https://fittedbypedro.com/ , which I don't recommend. The bike fit might have been OK, but I didn't get the "physical therapy or kinesiology" that I had been hoping for. I think he did a range-of-motion screening, but I don't remember it being particularly thorough. I also suspect that the fit might not have been "best" for me... but... it's been 3 years and it's not an exact science.

Good luck!

I bought my first road bike just a few years ago, had the bike fit where they focused on knee angle. I didn't have any problems with pain, maybe because of all traffic lights I was moving all the time.

Life changes and now I do rides indoors on my smart trainer 2x/week sometimes 3. I had inner knee pain/discomfort with my left knee, kept going and it got worse then my right knee was sore. I stopped, rested, ice etc, etc I took off my SPD and put on flat pedals. I was hit n miss riding, mostly missing. With Primavera coming I started riding indoors again regularly and inner left knee pain is back. So, clipped or flats I'm having the same problem and need this fixed asap. If you know of a professional bike fitter (not a company trained one) please let me know.

CCRS #5 - Olive Hill #RideChange

Julia Walker

For those planning to join Anne and I this Saturday for the Olive Hill ride, please note a slight route change: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/38467369. We have removed crossing 84 twice so the route is a bit shorter.

Please park at the lot just past the visitor's center. If you would like to cut an additional ~6 miles, you could meet us at the base of the Dumbarton. There is a parking lot but no restrooms, so allow time to stop on the way in if you need. We should be at the base of the bridge ~9:20. Our first regroup will be at the benches on the other side of the bridge so you could also meet us there.

Please print and bring your own cue sheet if you are not using RidewithGPS, attached.

Thanks
Julia & Anne

Hi Cinnamon,

Several years ago a group from Innersport (https://innersport.com/ - from Oakland/El Cerrito) did a presentation of their bike fitting technology at a club meeting. A couple folks from our club used their bike fitting services.

Dr Jess ( Dr Jessica Greaux) at Innersport does the fittings. I went to her for a fitting and it made a huge difference for me – I was having knee problems as well. I was very happy with the entire process and everything I learned going thru it.

https://innersport.com/services-and-locations/bikefit-and-cycling-analysis-2

Dr Jess is a Chiropractic Doctor and has won a lot of recognition as a sports doctor (https://innersport.com/about/dr-greaux). She treats high level athletes as well as cruisers like myself. Check out the webpage for her qualifications and how she approaches bike fitting. Pre-pandemic, her sessions were at her house in El Cerrito, not at the Oakland facility.

Good luck, whoever you choose.

Bob

When:  It's going to be a scenic rolling hill ride.  We will be meeting at 8:30am and will roll at 8:45am.

Where:  Buena Vista Park (street parking)

Please download this latest RWGPS route onto your ride computer device: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/38431063

No cue sheet will be handed out and no riders will be left behind.

All riders need to be fully vaccinated.  Bring a mask and use it as needed per CDC guidelines for COVID safety.

Routes and Rest Stops:

First water and restroom stop will be at Alviso-Adobe Park (mile 12.5). Then we will re-group at the top of Felter/Sierra Road and check out the scenery at the top and report if the parking lot is full or not 🙂.

Then descend down to Calaveras and climb back up the wall and onto the false summit while enjoying the green rolling hills and checking out the reservoir from afar.

After a re-group at the false summit, then stop by the Alviso-Adobe Park again for water and use of restrooms. (mile 44.5)

Please bring 2 bottles (more if you want) for hydration.  Now is a good time, I believe, to enjoy the green hills in this cooler weather without needing as much hydration.  I hope that everyone has a chance to stop (safely) and take photos along the way in the hills.

Mark will be leading the ride with me.  See you on Saturday!

Bob

Hello Everyone,

Can anyone suggest an expert bike fitter? Someone who has background knowledge of physical therapy or kinesiology.

Thanks,

Cinnamon
