Sat. June 9, 9:00AM South Bay Loop Thru Santa Clara 26 miles, 1 (300’), T Start location: McCarthy Ranch Shopping Center parking lot, by Starbucks, 127 Ranch Dr, Milpitas.
Join me, on a flat easy loop into the South Bay this Saturday. Yes, it's the same route I offered a few weekends ago! The difference, though, is that it is National Donald Duck day and, if that isn't memorable enough, it looks like it will be a beautiful day in June. We’ll start in Milpitas and use the Guadalupe Creek and San Tomas Creek Bike Trails. We will stop for coffee and goodies at City Lights Espresso, in Santa Clara, around mile 16.0. In the words of Donald Duck, "oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!" Check out the route at: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/27734383. No drops. Faster riders welcome to go ahead. Extreme weather will cancel the ride. Changes will be announced on FFBC iGroup site or call/text/email me directly. Route sheet is attached to this message. Re: Dangerous pavement on Skyline Blvd Oakland
Nick Laszlo
You pretty much echoed what I said, Vanessa. Road conditions can change from day-to-day, e.g. erosion and seismic activity, and other factors, such as what I experienced today on my solo ride. I was riding south on Fremont Blvd and local utility crews
did a crap job filling in the square hole they had cut in the bike lane, which turned the raised repaired asphalt into a launch ramp for my bike. I had to bunny-hop over it. Strava says that I have ridden this rode 108 times. Each time it was in some way
different from the time before. The message therefore is: “assume nothing”, “expect anything”, “be prepared for everything”. Which does not mean riding in a state of paranoia. It means riding in a cautious heightened state of alertness at all times, IMHO.
Nevertheless, I reiterate, some roads are much less likely to turn from acceptable to life-threatening from one day to the next. The roads that we rode on the Tuesday “moderate” ride were not amongst those roads. That’s the only point that I was trying
to make politely in my response to Julie’s thoughtful email.

Just my 2 cents to the conversation. Road conditions change constantly and there’s really little way for cyclists (riders or leaders) to keep up to date with all the pot holes. Paying close attention to the road ahead and watching your speed, especially on unfamiliar roads, are your best bets for staying safe. Posting to the FFBC group to warn others is icing on the cake. Thanks Julie.

V. P.s. As an example of how quickly things change, I rode Skyline a few weeks ago and it was fine modulo the usual potholes at the end of Skyline.

I’ll have to give this some thought, Julie. In spite of being a relatively new member of FFBC, I have in fact lived in Fremont for nearly 2 years now and know of some safe & interesting routes that I have done dozens of times and have never spotted you
guys, so I might be able to come up with something new. I just need some time to come up with something good. You’re right in that many Bay Area roads are indeed utter crap (I have a titanium plate on my left collarbone as proof of that) but the danger
of crashing can be lessened greatly through avoidance of the most egregious roads, which unfortunately can change dramatically from one week to the next because of erosion and seismic influences.
No place in the world is a perfect panacea for cycling (south of France comes close). We for instance have great weather compared to most of the world, but not such good roads. Other places have great roads, but you can only ride on them safely 6 months
out of the year because of harsh weather. It’s a mixed bag. One of the things that I look for riding in the Bay Area on a beautiful day like Tuesday is that if I notice a glaring scarcity of hardcore cyclists on the road that I’m on (other than the group
I’m riding with), that’s always a red flag for me!
Let’s see what I come up with. My big problem with being group leader is that I’m lousy with directions, but I guess there’s a solution for that too. I could ride with GPS and a single earbud in one ear, that way I wouldn’t have to take my eyes off the
“obstacle course” that I’m riding on. Route sheets are useless for me because I’m extremely far-sighted!
See you guys next week. By the way, except for when we’re riding on lousy roads, I really enjoy riding with FFBC. You guys are one of the most pleasant clubs I’ve ever ridden with. You’re good people! 😃
