Important LAP 3 info & attached route sheet

Lori Sommer

Hello,

What a wonderful ride in the hills last week.  It was a cold and foggy start but the day warmed up a bit and the beautiful green hills were scenic even unfilled with lambs, calves or llamas. We had a big turnout for all paces and are hoping for the same this Sunday.  Thank you to our ride leaders: Vanessa, Rob T., and Louis.  The weather forecast is questionable so we will send out a message either way by Sunday at 7AM.

LAP 3 crosses the Dumbarton and we plan to climb Edgewood (no Brewster Bump for 2019!), Olive Hill and Huddart Park and the official route is 44 miles and 1971'.  But we have options!  You can skip Huddart and your route will be 41 miles and 1536' as shown in blue (reduce route by 3 miles and 435') or skip both Olive Hill and Huddart and the route becomes 38miles and 1250' as shown in purple on the route sheet (reduce route by 6 miles and 721').  Another unofficial option - park at the base of the bridge and meet us at the first regroup at the benches on the other side of the bridge to sign in (please let me know in advance) and reduce your ride by 5-6 miles.

One important point is to use the restroom BEFORE you arrive to Don Edward.  The gates are open (and we are parking in the upper lot) BUT THE RESTROOMS ARE CLOSED.  So we will do our sign-in at the upper parking lot rather than the restroom.  Ken has verified the restrooms will be open at BayFront Park at mile 8.3 (run by the city and on a timer).

The second point is to please print your route sheet!  It is attached to the email.  We will bring a few to the start incase someone has last minute printer issues but please plan to bring your own so you aren't caught short.

We hope to see you (and that the rain takes a break)!

Lori, Ken and Vicki

Description
LAP 3 takes us over the Bay, to sample scenic Peninsula roads. We will meet at Don Edwards and cross the Dumbarton Bridge.

Remember to use the upper parking lot.

This time we will ride behind Facebook and regroup at Bayfront Park. We will ride through some nice residential neighborhoods to reach Alameda de Las Pulgas, climb Edgewood Road and eventually return on Canada Road. Our route will climb through the Olive Hill Loop and Huddart Park where we will descend King’s Mountain and Woodside Road. There are some options to reduce climbing. Our well-deserved coffee stop will be at mile 33 in Menlo Park.

PDF versions of our Excel route sheets will be sent out via email to FFBC’s https://ffbc.groups.io/g/info/topics a few days before each ride. We ask that you print and bring it to the ride. The link to the route on ridewithgps.com is available for downloading but any route sheet generated from the link is for information only and does not have listed regroups.

We will maintain a Touring through Moderate pace (10 to 16 mph). No drops and regroups as needed. Extreme weather or construction may modify the route and rain cancels. A ride cancellation email will be sent to https://ffbc.groups.io/g/info/topics by the ride leader on the morning of the ride if it is being cancelled (no email means the ride is on). If you are unsure of the ride status, call or text ride leader on the morning of the ride.

SERIES DESCRIPTION:
LAP Rides - More Fun!
The Less Aggressive Progressive (LAP) ride series is back for its seventh year and it’s going to be even better! Not only will you train for a metric century by cycling weekly routes, that get progressively longer with more climbing, but you will do it with a fun group of people! This year we are increasing the number of rides from ten to fourteen and we plan to summit Mt. Hamilton to finish out the series.

Of course most of the LAP routes can be modified (even Mt. Hamilton) to reduce mileage and climbing and you are always welcome to join mid-route, skip coffee/lunch, leave early or ride off the front – just let a ride leader know. There is always a sweep and we do many smaller regroups so no one is left behind. Once again, the LAP rides will be lead by lots of friendly, knowledgeable and helpful ride leaders for the LAP series.

The LAP series has less elevation gain and climbing than the traditional FFBC Progressive Series (PRS) and is aimed at Touring/Moderate pace riders (especially those that climb at a slower pace).
